AKIPRESS.COM – President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the UN Conference on the review of the objectives of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”, which was held in New York on March 22, the President’s website says.
The President noted in his speech that Tajikistan will host a high-level international conference on the preservation of glaciers in Dushanbe in 2025.
Rahmon stressed that today the issue of uniting the world community to solve water problems is becoming even more important. Urgent action is needed at all levels in order to solve water problems, he added.
Tajikistan, on whose territory 60% of the water resources of Central Asia are formed, will strengthen efforts to expand cooperation in the field of water in Central Asia within the framework of its chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, according to the President.
The country’s strategy in the water sector will be developed at the national level in accordance with today’s requirements and standards.
The President also noted that 98% of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants in Tajikistan. The country has mastered only 5% of the country’s hydropower potential, according to him.
“We have decided to double our hydropower potential by 2050 and make our respective contribution to the development of the green economy,” the head of state said.
Rahmon reminded that, at the initiative of the Tajik side, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 9 resolutions on water issues, and their implementation laid a solid foundation for achieving coordinated global water goals.
