Azerbaijan has actually confirmed that it use satellites to spy on Armenia. The “Report on space monitoring of extractive mines in the Republic of Armenia” was dedicated to the results of similar activities in mining.
According to the results of this report, “Armenia’s mining industry, where environmental norms and standards are not observed today, causes serious damage to the environment.”
“About 70 percent of Azerbaijan’s surface water resources are formed in neighboring countries through transboundary water flows. Since Armenia is geographically located in the basin of the rivers flowing through Azerbaijan, any mining activities carried out on its territory certainly have an impact on our ecology. Armenia, as a member of the Espoo Convention, should consult on any activity carried out on its territory and in many cases obtain Azerbaijan’s consent,” the report adds.
Azerbaijan, however, seems to have forgotten that there are only two participants of Espoo Convention in the region, and the second one is Azerbaijan itself. In other words, demanding an account from Armenia, Azerbaijan should be ready to take countermeasures and be accountable to Armenia for all enterprises that are of interest to the Armenian side.
