Armenia proposes Japan to join the Crossroads of Peace project, Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan told Japan’s outgoing Ambassador Fukushima Masanori. Alen Simonyan emphasized that Japan is the most important partner for Armenia, and Armenia is interested in deepening multi-polar cooperation with Japan. The Speaker stressed that Armenia highly values Japan’s clear messages regarding the unacceptability of Azerbaijan’s policy of using force in the region, expressing gratitude to the Japanese government for the 2 million funds allocated for the primary needs of more than 100,000 forcibly displaced Armenians as a result of Azerbaijan’s armed attack on Nagorno Karabakh…

For the first time ever, all five presidents of the Central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) met in-person with a U.S. president as part of “C5+1” summit on the sidelines of last week’s U.N. General Assembly. However, this was not the only time Central Asian leaders have gotten together recently — they have been on something of a “C5+” summit road show over the past year-and-a-half. The tour started in January 2022, when they held a virtual summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Next came an October 2022 meeting with Vladimir Putin in Kazakhstan, followed by a November summit…
The beehives were in no man’s land. After the border clash near his village in April, Geram drove down to the fields where his family has been farming for decades and kept a small apiary. But when he got near, he heard gunshots. The Azerbaijanis were firing at him from their new positions on the surrounding hilltops. He ran back to his car and never returned. Another local, Samvel Hyusunts, lost nearly 70 hectares (173 acres) where his family had been farming wheat for decades. “They take what they can have,” he says, standing in a dusty suit and flat cap on…
Rice has reached its highest price since 2008 and several Asian countries have started imposing export restrictions. Rice is a vital food for the world’s population. Nearly 20% of the calories consumed by half the world come from the grains, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). These figures become more relevant in Asia, since the continent consumes around 85% of the total rice production, the FAO said. It’s no wonder then that an increase in the price of rice, the highest since 2008, has set off alarm bells around the world, to the point…
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and acting Giants skipper Kai Correa stood for a photo as they exchanged pregame lineup cards. They were believed to be the first managers or head coaches of Asian descent to face each other in any of the four major U.S. sports. Freddie Freeman made a little history of his own by hitting his 59th double of the season. He then scored on a three-run homer by J.D. Martinez, lifting National League West champion Los Angeles past San Francisco 6-2 on Friday night. Wilmer Flores homered and hit an RBI single for the Giants, who were managed by bench coach Correa. San Francisco fired…
Tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians have fled from Nagorno-Karabakh since the territory surrendered to Azerbaijan on 20 September. Local forces in Karabakh agreed to be disarmed and disbanded after an Azerbaijani military offensive triggered intense fighting. The breakaway republic and its institutions will “cease to exist” from 1 January 2024, the region’s separatist leader has said. The territory is recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan but large areas of it have been controlled by ethnic Armenians for three decades. It is at the heart of one of the world’s longest-running conflicts. Where is Nagorno-Karabakh? The territory lies in the…
Iran has been fueling the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, providing weapons and support to Yerevan Iran is actively escalating a new round of conflict in the southern Caucasus region. Against the backdrop of reconciliation efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia under the aegis of the EU and U.S., Iran has been making every effort in recent weeks to fuel revanchist sentiments in Armenia, and acting on it by mediating arms purchases from India and demonstrating military support. According to official Iranian sources, particularly the official Telegram channel of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), on Friday, September 8, units of…
The first floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) system in the region was inaugurated on September 13 on Lake Yerevan in the Armenian capital. The test variant has a capacity of 150 KW. The project was developed by the Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund and the French NEPSEN and as a result the 800,000 euro grant was approved by the French government. Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avinyan hailed the station as ‘unique.’ “We’ve been developing solar energy with small steps since 2018 and I think that over time these…
