Armenia violated children’s rights over the course of the past decades, according to a report by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman). Noting that 12 children were killed and 67 others were injured in Armenian attacks on civilians in the 44-day Karabakh War in 2020, the report noted that many children also lost their parents as a result of the attacks. “The targeting of civilian objects and the destruction of many houses, education, and health institutions led to violations of the rights of children to education, health, and other rights and caused psychological trauma for…
The Armenian Foreign Ministry, in response to an inquiry by Radio Azatutyun, confirms that the bodies of two Armenian women were found in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, who had allegedly starved to death during the first days of June. “Before the exacerbation of the situation in Khartoum, in the days of leaving the city, the two Armenian sisters (one of the sisters is named Zvart Yekavian) were also offered to leave the city, but the older sister had problems with relocation, and the younger sister (61) did not want to leave the capital and stayed to take care of…
Last fall, when researchers unearthed the remains of a 3,000-year-old structure in the western Armenian town of Metsamor, they faced two mysteries: First, they didn’t know what purpose the structure had served. Beyond that, a strange powdery substance covering the area left them stumped. “We knew it was something organic and collected about four to five sacks worth of the material,” Krzysztof Jakubiak, an archaeologist at the University of Warsaw who led the excavation, tells Live Science’s Jennifer Nalewicki. The team assumed, at first, the material was simply ash. After all, charred remnants of the building’s reed roof and wooden…
Doha, Qatar: Expressing his desire to ‘launch joint projects with Qatar on high technology’, President of the Republic of Armenia, H E Vahagn Khachaturyan has said that Armenian people and businesses can learn and be motivated by Qatar’s development. Talking about existing close ties between Qatar and Armenia in an exclusive interview with The Peninsula, the President of Armenia said: “We have great potential when it comes to relations between Armenia and Qatar. Now we are set to intensify efforts to strengthen these relations, but our diplomatic relations already started in 1997.” He said that it was his first visit to…
Economic factors arising from the Ukraine war are binding Armenia ever tighter to its longtime strategic partner and patron, Russia. Armenia’s trade with Russia nearly doubled in 2022, but that growth was mostly re-exports necessitated by the Western sanctions against Moscow. Armenian producers therefore see little benefit from the increased turnover and instead face growing uncertainty because business is being conducted in the weak and unstable Russian currency. The trend threatens to undermine Armenia’s cautious efforts to reduce its political and security dependence on Russia and build stronger ties with the West. Ruble trade hurts Armenian exporters According to Armenian…
Hripsime Zatikyan Wright was born when Armenia was part of the Soviet Union, and she was never taught that there was a God. When she was 12 years old, a huge earthquake destroyed 90% of her hometown, killing at least 25,000 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless. Wright, who has recounted her experience in an article found in Gospel Library, was in school when the shaking began. As a crowd started to run down the stairs, she followed an impression to go back and get a red knit scarf her mother had made. She then watched, red knit scarf in…

It’s ironic that Australia commemorated “Harmony Day” this week. Dreamed up 24 years ago by the Howard government as a local version of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD), it’s supposed to be a celebration of diversity, respect and belonging. Yet there’s been much disharmony in Australia of late, and not just in regards to racial discrimination. For most of this week, and last, the country was preoccupied with Aukus and warmongering, after it was revealed that Canberra had agreed to pay up to A$368 billion (US$246 billion) to the US for a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. Aukus – the three-way security tie up between…
Germany has become one of Ukraine’s leading weapons suppliers in the 11 months since Russia’s invasion, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz also has gained a reputation for hesitating to take each new step — generating impatience among allies. Berlin’s perceived foot-dragging, most recently on the Leopard 2 battle tanks that Kyiv has long sought, is rooted at least partly in a post-World War II political culture of military caution, along with present-day worries about a possible escalation in the war. On Friday, Germany inched closer to a decision to deliver the tanks, ordering a review of its Leopard stocks in preparation…
