Governor Robert Ghukasyan of Syunik Province on Thursday received Niels Scott, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Armenia, the Syunik provincial hall informs Armenian.

Scott is in Syunik for the first time, and the provincial governor, welcoming his visit, thanked him, noting that it is thanks also to the work done and the many programs implemented by the UN agencies in difficult times that the residents of Syunik have stayed in their settlements.

The UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Armenia asked about the socioeconomic condition of Syunik, especially the life in its border villages.

The governor presented the problems of Syunik by domains, and in more detail: the situation in its border settlements in the post-war period. He noted that the primary issue—after security, of course—in the villages of Syunik is the development of agriculture in the face of new challenges and difficulties, also noting the ensuring of infrastructure improvement, drinking and irrigation water, access to health care, and quality education.

The interlocutors reflected also on the desired strategy and logic of development programs being implemented in Armenia by international organizations in parallel with the programs of the country’s government, so that all of this has a shared visible result and is more effective.

Matters of joint work and cooperation were discussed, too.
